Great Art in a Great Space Benefiting Save the Bay
China Basin and Art 2 Art Curation present Art by the Bay, a pop-up art show and Earth Day event benefiting Save the Bay on Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
More than an art opening, more than a cocktail party, Art by the Bay will feature the work of five regional artists exhibiting in the China Basin building. Attendees will enjoy cocktails, food trucks, music, and the opportunity to purchase amazing artwork. Admission is free; proceeds from the evening’s food and drink sales will benefit Save the Bay, the region’s largest organization focused on protecting, restoring, and celebrating San Francisco Bay since 1961. Music by Emily Afton, Azuah, and Deyo Braun of Hibbity Dibbity.
The exhibition promises to please with the work of Johnny Botts, Hilary Eddy, Karen Druker, Athena Kim, and Jonovan Ottenbacher. Each artist presents his or her interpretation of creative expression through large, bold, and colorful pieces. Curator, Joyce Faulknor of Art 2 Art Curation has this to say about the exhibit, “This collection has such personality and variety. I strove to find a series of works that flow and create emotion. This collection takes people on a short ride from hot to cool, high to low, and ends on a calming note. The ride will be unique and different for each viewer.”
Variety is the magical component of this event with each artist bringing something unique. Botts’s whimsical, colorful robots promise to entice and bring joy to each viewer. The glass and floral compositions by Eddy transform everyday objects into complex scenes filled with light and color, challenging the viewer’s perception of the ordinary. Druker’s canvases explore the boundaries of mixed media and abstraction while including elements of her love of nature and the landscape. Athena Kim’s oversized paintings convey the emotional expression with particular emphasis on creative sculpting painting through the playful, yet intuitive process of creating each stroke and layer. Ottenbacher’s large photographs on metal substrates provide colorful scenes that are calm, yet impactful.
