Things are really heating up in Korea.
Google is preparing to launch Google Shopping in South Korea. A big move, and who knows? Google can finally shake things up for Naver and Kakao…
haha! I jest.
Mobile and website? I say…”Not.”
Shopping ads account for 50% of revenues for both Naver and Kakao (mobile and internet), and the introduction of Google Shopping will not the hurt the market that much.
I could be wrong. I’m all for Google. But I say, “Eh” in term of its market moves.
- It’s doesn’t have the market in terms of Kakao and Naver mobile players, and it shows no signs of picking up. Nothing. And it doesn’t have a Google mobile phone here (Korea). I sooo want one, but alas I couldn’t get one. 🙁
- The website is weak (in terms of S. Korea). Maybe redesign? Google once tried that before (in Korea), but didn’t have any luck.
- Google international (Google outside of Korea) is great. Converting that is where its hits home. But where can you find it that any place that isn’t home? Long gone are places that Korea places ship over to you (fraction of those still exists). Luxury clothes and accessories? Street wear? Books? Rice cooker? Refrigerator? Blenders? We have that in Korea.
- Amazon (loads of shopping) and I didn’t have a single thing here yet. (But it’s coming.) Google to work with Amazon? Not in a millions years.
Maybe this time will be different.
Right?
Google Voice, and Google mobile, and Google temperature… but that just Google stuff. Google Voice is a possibility. I’m up for Google Voice (Samsung has already put of out!) be really the centerpiece of the house. Shopping is a whole new story.
It’s got Samsung and LG conglomerates (why do you think my Google mobile is not here?) to deal with, AND the Korean government… blocking them at every turn. The list goes on.
Maybe they have a deal with Dongdaemoon shopping center to bring it online? That’s an idea, but no way that can happen. Too many stores, night times markets, etc.
Sadly, it’s going long, long time before it will gradually, one-of-the-companies to be shopping on the list. The internet has gotten BIG, real big. Maybe it is got that. It’s got Korea vs. Google Shopping: I will take Korea.
Prediction: Google Shopping closes and just fades away.

[단독] 구글 쇼핑, 한국 시장 진출 초읽기.. 네이버·카카오와 경쟁 불가피

구글이 한국에서도 ‘구글 쇼핑’ 서비스를 시작한다.
25일 정보기술(IT) 업계에 따르면 구글이 국내에서 구글 쇼핑 서비스를 시작하기 위해 준비 중인 것으로 확인됐다. 쇼핑 검색 광고가 매출 절반 이상을 차지하는 네이버는 물론 쇼핑 서비스를 포함한인공지능(AI) 플랫폼 비즈니스를 확대하려는 카카오와의 피할 수 없는 경쟁이 펼쳐질 전망이다.
이날 구글은 협력사들에게 구글 쇼핑과 관련한 업로드용 상품 데이터 베이스 구성방식과 광고 성과 측정 방식 등을 전반적으로 설명하는 비공개 세션을 마련했다. 구글 쇼핑은 구글 사업 모델 중 하나로 현재 국내에서는 서비스를 제공하지 않고 있다. 네이버 쇼핑 검색처럼 온라인 쇼핑 사업자들이 올려둔 상품들을 종합해서 노출해 쉽게 가격을 비교할 수 있다.
구글은 지난해 유럽 시장에서 구글 쇼핑 결과물이 검색 결과 상단에 우선 공개되도록 해 공정 경쟁을 저해했다는 이유로 유럽연합(EU)으로부터 과징금 24억2000만유로(약 3조900억원)를 부과받은 바 있다. 이후 구글은 구글 쇼핑 운영을 분리하는 방안을 추진했고 쇼핑 광고의 페이지 상단 노출을 경쟁입찰에 부치는 형태로 사업 운영 방식을 변경했다.
구글 쇼핑은 국내에서 베타 서비스를 실행하기 위한 사이트도 제작한 것으로 확인됐다. 이미 구글 검색창을 통해 구글 쇼핑을 검색하면 ‘구글 쇼핑 베타 바로가기’ 링크가 보여진다. 현재 해당 링크를 클릭하면 카테고리별 인기 품목을 보여주는 화면이 나온다. 다만 상품을 클릭하면 쇼핑 관련 검색 결과를 아직 노출하지는 않고 있다.
구글은 구글 쇼핑 서비스를 시작하면서 AI 스피커에 쇼핑 기능을 탑재할 가능성이 큰 것으로 알려졌다. 구글은 현재 AI 스피커 구글 홈과 구글 홈 미니에 대한 전파 인증을 받아놓은 상태로 업계에서는 빠르면 상반기, 늦어도 연내 구글 홈이 한국에 정식 출시할 것으로 보고 있다. 스마트폰에 탑재된 구글의 AI 비서 어시스턴트는 이미 한국어 서비스를 시작했다.
구글 코리아는 현재 신세계그룹 계열사인 신세계I&C(035510)와 구글 홈 유통 경로 확보를 위해 논의 중이다. 신세계I&C는 마이크로소프트(MS) 서피스 시리즈와 같은 하드웨어 기기부터 게임 등 소프트웨어를 유통하는 회사로 신세계그룹 계열인 이마트나 일렉트로마트를 통해 상품을 공급한다. 두 회사 계약이 확정되면 이마트나 일렉트로마트에서 구글 홈을 구입할 수 있다.
구글이 구글 쇼핑을 국내에 정식으로 출범하게 되면 온라인 쇼핑 회사는 물론 쇼핑 검색 광고가 매출의 절반 이상을 차지하는 네이버(NAVER(035420))도 영향을 받을 전망이다. 또 카카오톡 플랫폼을 바탕으로 광고를 진행하는 카카오(035720)도 마찬가지다. 구글이 AI 스피커를 본격 출시하고 쇼핑 서비스를 함께 시작하면 카카오 미니를 통해 플랫폼을 확대하려던 카카오에게는 거대 경쟁자가 나타나는 셈이다.
특히 네이버의 경우 네이버 쇼핑 검색과 구글 쇼핑의 서비스 형태가 유사하다는 점에서 글로벌 공룡인 구글과 네이버가 직접 시장에서 부딪칠 가능성이 큰 상황이다. 구글 관계자는 “구글은 아주 제한적인 사용자를 대상으로 쇼핑 광고 베타 테스트를 진행하고 있으며 현재로서는 (향후 계획 등을) 추가로 확인해 줄 수는 없다”고 말했다.
